Like all good stories Michelle can remember almost everyone there
is when it comes to her music. Her mom says she has been singing since she was a
little girl “she would never stop, there were times that it would drive me nuts”
her mom recalls with a smile. At age twelve, Michelle’s best friend at the time,
told her she should try out for the choir, as she was blowing off the idea her
friend shoved her into the choir room and they were both confronted for horse
play by the teacher. While explaining to the teacher what the fuss was about the
choir director lead Michelle to the piano and tested her with a series of vocal
scales. The instructor was surprised by the range and clarity that was delivered
and made arrangements to include the talented singer into the choir. Now if only
the rest of the journey had been that easy. Not long after that Michelle’s
family moved from the inner city to the suburbs going from an inner city school
to one that was surrounded by cow pastures. This also meant going from a small
choir and being the lead soprano to a large well established choir and those
with more learning experience than this budding vocalist had ever been exposed
to. A little overwhelmed and feeling very out of place it didn’t stop her from
singing, if anything it made her work harder to keep up with those around her.
Michelle was not only in choir, her first introduction to preforming
was in dance. From age six till she was nineteen Michelle took dance at Nancy’s
School of Dance Art. She was in many competitions and recitals all at a
professional level. During this time she took workshop class from Patsy Swayze,
although the girls dreamed Patrick would appear, it was an experience of a
lifetime. Her dance took her all over the United States from Disney in Florida
to Vegas in Nevada. Michelle considers it an adrenaline rush like no other to be
in front of a crowd and be able to entertain.
Along with dance classes and competitions Michelle was awarded a
full scholarship at the Rice Conservatory in Houston. The scholarship allowed
for a lever of professional voice training that her family budget would not have
been able to provide. Along with the scholarship at the conservatory Michelle
was also awarded a partial scholarship to study Musical Theater. These two
awards combine would offer an experience that would sling shot her into music
and fuel her passion for performing on an even higher
level.
After graduating high school Michelle chose the Art Institute of
Houston with the idea that she would pursue the Music industry next, but life
had other plans. After graduating the Art Institute she made the choice to put
all her passions aside to marry and although it was not the ideal pursuit she
found that she could love someone more than life itself. In November of 1995 her
first child was born and in 1998 her second, for her it has been the most
rewarding experience in her life. Amongst the many journeys in her life the most
heartbreaking and difficult was the loss of her father. Adopting her at age six
and becoming her legal guardian and god father he was truly the most amazing man
in her life until 2004 when he passed. “He used to say that he always knew what
kind of mood I was in by whether or not I was singing”, Michelle says. It was
then that she truly began looking back on her life and reassessing what
everything in it meant.
In 2005 Michelle attended Nashville2U where she met others with
the same passion and ideas. From that she worked with local songwriters and
recording artists. She worked with a gentleman out of Alvin, TX together they
recorded “Drive” co-written by recording artist Gretchen Wilson. It was the
first time that Michelle completed a demo at a professional level complete with
video. In 2006 Michelle responded to an internet add requesting a singer in The
Woodlands, TX for a pilot for Television. Taking along her mother to insure that
it was not a scam she met with an independent videographer who was creating a
pilot with a story line of women bikers. From that was born the theme song
“Gotta Ride” although the pilot was never picked up the experience was
priceless.
It has been quit a journey for this young up and coming star but
through it all the lessons she has since she says, “have been amazing!” Her
journey has led her through both good and bad experiences but it has given her
the strength and knowledge to face the obstacles ahead.
Michelle is beginning a new chapter of her life, she says she has found someone who has
changed her life and made her believe in fairytales again. She has gone from a
family of three to a family of five and cannot wait to see what the future
holds. Currently she is in the studio chasing the dream that is becoming a
reality. Michelle says, “You have to keep moving forward and always have faith
no matter what life puts in front of you.” With that being said this girl is on
her way, so keep an eye out and make room for this one in your CD
case.
